When getting a car: let’s activate the necessary functions
It’s not a secret that one of the reasons that can shift the scale at choice of the car in favor of Volkswagen Audi Group’s production is ample opportunities of electronics even in low-budget cars (I ask the owners of maximum complete sets not to swear, but nevertheless Polo is not Phaeton). One of the favorite tricks of managers – a demonstration of the regular function of a centralized remote lifting / lowering all the windows of the car by holding the key fob (Note: possible only in the package Highline). With me, one ran to get the deposit, left for a Kia Rio =) – There is no such “fashionable” frills, would have to put a separate kolhoz from the car market.
I’ll allow one digression: describing all standard chips, gizmos and frills, it is worth noting the other side of the coin: the complexity, as a rule, does not contribute to the reliability and durability. With time (in some years, say, a few years) the electrics can start to go haywire (or not – it depends on how lucky you are). For an example, you can read how the power windows worked on my former car.
Back to the topic at hand. Of course, the closers are not the only possibilities of regular electronics, and in this post I will try to tell about other amenities that are not activated conventionally, but to use them (all or only those that you need exactly), it is possible, and even desirable, before getting a car into possession. Your joy and satisfaction of using your car will be even more complete. While they are screwing mudguards, or protection, or whatever else you have ordered, they will put the necessary ticks and numbers in 10 minutes with the help of a service program. Of course, if you do not regret the additional 700-1000 rubles. Many do it on their own or with friends who have the necessary equipment, but in this case do not forget to write down on a piece of paper each time where and what you have changed, with a note as it was before … so that in case of failure to return the necessary parameters to their original state.
So, let me list the main points:
1) Central locking control:
1.1. Есть возможность активировать автоматическое запирание всех дверей (блокировку от открывания снаружи) при достижении скорости 15 км/ч. 1.2 Automatic door unlocking when the ignition key is removed from the lock. Activation (block, operation, byte, bit): 09, LC, 0, 3. I didn’t do it myself. If you need to get things out the back, then press the button on the handle I am not lazy.
1.3 Opening the doors in two steps: the first press (or turn the key in the lock) unlocks only the driver’s door, the second consecutive – all doors. 09, Adaptation, Central Locking: Selective (Single) Door Locking. Changed value 0 to 1.
1.4 Sound indication of closing / opening the car with the key. Activation of functions: – on closing: 09, LC, 5, 1 – on opening: 09, LC, 5, 4 I did not activate myself. If the car does not blink red light once when closing – I still see that a door or trunk not closed.
2) Change the composition of the on-board computer menu items:

2.1 Displaying the coolant temperature reading. In the network except the lazy does not complain, why in the absence of an arrow indicator of the engine temperature could not immediately display this indicator in the menu of the BC. It is very useful both in cold and in hot weather.
2.2 The display of the instantaneous fuel consumption (in liters per hour). It looks like this:

2.4 Presumably it is also possible to activate prompts about which gear to shift (in cars with manual transmission, in order to drive economically). On the display there is such an opportunity. If BC is able to give out information, then there is a place.
2.5. arrow test :). In the menu of the adaptation window, select “Staging”, change the value to “Active”. I will not do it myself – Polo is not a sports car.
2.6 Digital indication of the current speed. I will switch it off as soon as possible. If you have a fully functional speedometer on the dash – unnecessary item, which is always flipped.
Be warned in advance: I have not tried it myself yet. If I do – I promise to supplement the information with facts.
3) Light Control:
3.1 Leaving Home / Coming Home functions. Typically activated from the factory on vehicles equipped with light sensor and a switch for this function in the cabin (in Audi, usually next to the headlight corrector). The essence of the function: when you open or (and) lock the car from the original key fob in a poor (in the opinion of the light sensor) outside light turns on fog lights for 30-120 seconds (the default is usually 30, but the interval seems to be somehow too can be set). Could be useful to avoid stepping in a puddle while walking away from the car at night, and looks interesting =). Asked the dealer to activate – couldn’t. They said we don’t have information in our technical documentation on programming this feature in the Polo Sedan. Of course not! Because even in the Polo Sedan they do not put a light sensor and if it is possible to activate these functions, PTF will be switched on both at night and in the daytime. Activate presumably so: – 09, LC, 10, 1 (responsible for activating Leaving Home) – 09, LC, 10, 2 (responsible for the activation of Coming Home) – 09, LC, 13, 6 (option work functions: 0 = Fog Lights / 1 = Low Beam). By “Low Beam” is meant, most likely, the low beam. As a rule, zero value of the bit – deactivation of the function, one – activation. I will try it myself, since the dealer could not.
3.2 Cornering Lights, or cornering lights. Usually activated as standard on those cars (not the polo sedan) which have two lamps in each PTF, or there is an additional side lamp in the headlights, as on the Touareg. The dealer will probably not be able to activate this function. How it works on a car with standard fog lights: with low beam on and PTFs switched off, at speeds from 0 to 40 km/h if you turn the steering wheel, from a certain angle of turn the steering wheel slowly turns on (as a light in the cabin when you open the door) the fog light in the direction in which you turn. When you leave the turn (or rather, when you return the steering wheel to the straight position), the fog light also goes off smoothly. The options are: a) only when the turn signal is on (and also to match the direction of the turn); b) regardless of whether the turn signal is on or not. To activate you can try to dig here: – 09, LC, 12, 6, Turn/Cornering Lights installed / active – 09, LC, 21, 7, Front Fog Lights (with Turn Lights) installed (we tell the electronics unit, that the car is installed PTF with additional corner lights – not sure what this need to activate)
3.3 Enable / disable lamp diagnostics. I had a low beam bulb burned out once. I was surprised that the on-board computer did not tell me anything about it, and wondered why. On this topic I found and digested the following information: If the multifunction display of the instrument panel (such as optional in Polo Hatchback – white indication on black background) is not obligatory for displaying messages about burned out lamps, you can code the following parameters, both all and selectively: – 09, LC, 11, 6: Lamp Diagnostics for Back-Up Light active (what for spare light – turn signals or what? I will not touch, just in case) – 09, LC, 11, 7: Lamp Diagnostics for License Plate Light active (also will not touch) – 09, LC, 16, 4: Lamp Diagnostics for Low Beam active (dipped) – 09, LC, 16, 5: Lamp Diagnostics for Rear Fog Light(s) active (rear PTF) – 09, LC, 16, 6: Lamp Diagnostics for (Separate) Daytime Running Lights (DRL) active (no such thing in our headlights) – 09, LC, 16,7: Lamp Diagnostics for High Beam active (high beam) – 09, LC, 19,4: Lamp Diagnostics for Turn Lights active (most likely meaning reverse light) – 09, LC, 19, 5: Lamp Diagnostics for Fog Lights and/or Cornering/Turn Lights active (PTF, who has) – 09, LC, 19, 6: Lamp Diagnostics for Tail Lights active (looks like rear plate lights) – 09, LC, 19, 7: Lamp Diagnostics for Brake Lights active (brake lights) I want to warn you if you are going to put xenon and (or) LEDs without the “cheat”, the diagnosis of the lamps better not activate – will constantly complain allegedly burned out lamps.
3.4 Emergency braking alarm. As far as I understood, if the car brakes suddenly (ABS is not interrupted), then from 4 seconds of such braking the brake lights should automatically start blinking rapidly and the hazard warning light turns on. This illumination turns off when you release the brake (in theory). I somehow did not manage to check whether it is activated at the factory or not, but activation / deactivation is possible: – 09, LC, 12, 4: Emergency Brake Flashing (Brake Light) active
3.5 It looks like the interior light turns on when you open the trunk. It can be useful, if the trunk was not closed, or opened without your knowledge. All the more, when the trunk is not closed the instrument panel does not inform us about this, unlike the unlocked doors. Activation: – 09, LC, 13, 5: Interior Light Enabling via Rear Lid
3.6: Automatic switching off of front low beam headlights. If anyone needs, you can activate here: – 09, LC, 21, 5: Fog Lights inactive with High Beams active
3.7: Looks like automatic activation of front low beam headlights when reverse gear is engaged. – 09, LC, 21, 2, Cornering/Turn Lights via Turn Signal active
3.8 Changing the number of blinks of the comfort turn signal. For those who do not know: when you move the left paddle switch in the vertical plane not to click (touched and released), the corresponding side of the turn indicators will blink three times. Who is not satisfied with exactly 3 flashes, set from the factory default, you can change the range from 1 to 5: – 09, Adaptation, Channel Lights: Comfort Turn Signals (Cycles)
3.9 Operation of brake lights when the ignition is off. On all configurations, by default, the brake lights go out when the ignition is turned off, regardless of the brake pedal being depressed. This is done to keep the battery from dying. On my previous car, in winter, the brake pedal once stopped going back to the upper end position on its own. Noticed it in time, adjusted some “frog” :). If you need stops to be on without ignition, do this: – 09, LC, 13, 2: Brake lights OFF while “Terminal 15 OFF” is inactive
4) Wiper control:
4.1 Drip cleaning. It means that after using the washer, the wipers will automatically make one additional sweep after 3 seconds to remove the drips. Activation: – 09, LC, 14, 4: Tear Wiping active
4.2 Automatic change of the frequency of the wipers depending on the speed of the car. Activation: – 09, LC, 14, 7: Speed dependent Wiper Stage Activation active
5.1 The klaxon is switched off by default, if the ignition is not switched on. Activation: – 09, LC, 17, 3: Horn with “Terminal 15 OFF” inactive (This value should be reversed)
5.2 Disable seat belt buckle alarm. I don’t recommend this. Except the buzzer, the light indication of unbuckled belt on the instrument panel is also disabled. – 17, LC, 1, 1
6) What you can NOT do by coding and adaptation:
6.1 Operation of the window lifters when the ignition is off on Trend and Comfort. 6.2. Installation of four window elevator button instead of two on the driver’s door and adaptation via VAG-COM. 6.3. Install cruise control. In the control unit firmware at the software level there are no procedures and functions responsible for control. You can screw in a switch, set the checkboxes via VAG-COM, but it still will not work.

The purpose of this blog post was originally to inform newly joined our ranks, or just choosing between Polo and other new car B-Class, about the limits of German electrics. Personally I find it easier to give the dealer 1.5 times the cost of washing the car and activate it all on the warranty car.

Activation of additional functions
In the previous blog post promised to make a record about the activation of additional functions. In general, the desire to make a record appeared when I noticed a wave of questions in the feed about the activation of that from the factory to activate too lazy to. Activation of each item will be supplemented with screenshots in the next 2-3 days.
In order for you to be able to activate the available features in your car, you will need: 1. Any mobile (portable) Windows-based PC with a USB port and more or less long battery life (1.5 hours is enough). 2. Cable VAG-COM 12.12 USBCAN, with support for HEX (HEX – hexadecimal number system, which passes the encoding of our unit.) You can buy a Chinese version, you can buy the original from Ross-Tech. Your choice. The cost ranges from 500 rubles (Hello Heavenly) to a fabulous $ 999 for the original Ross-Tech. The difference between the lanyards is that the Chinese versions can not be accessed online and can not be upgraded. Here is a photo of the Chinese lanyard from Aliexpress:
3. Software VCDS (Vasya-Diagnost) 12.12. You can download the pirate, you can buy the cracked original from Vasya-Diagnost, also there is an opportunity to use the original from Ross-Tech (again for fabulous money).
Note that before you connect the Chinese lanyard to your computer, you must turn off the Internet. Because the lanyard may go to the internet to update and may “die”. The driver for the lanyard usually comes with the lanyard itself (even the Chinese one). I was unlucky and had to download the driver from the Internet. It is important to put the driver in “offline” mode, i.e. when the internet is off.
The VCDS software is available on torrent and on the internet in general, so you have a huge choice of options here. Recommendation from me: Use the English version of VCDS. It is very intuitive and works fine.
The list of things you need is sorted out. If you have any questions I will be happy to answer them.
Before we get to the encoding itself, I advise you to create a text file on your computer and copy the native HEX value of your ECU into it. Why this is needed: 1. You’ve activated something and nothing starts … you’ll put the native HEX 2. You decided suddenly to go to HOD, and he can lose the fact that you were tampering with the brain of the car? … We copy the value of the activated functions into notepad, save the HEX 2 version in notepad and put the native one in the block. On return you can change everything back. 3. You are fed up with all the activated functions or you are going to sell the car and decided to roll everything back, but you don’t remember what you activated? … Insert the old HEX amount into the unit and everything is OK.
Now let’s move on to how to connect the machine and the computer: 1. Plug the cord into the computer (do not forget that the Internet must be OFF) 2. The cable is detected as a device by your computer. 3. Turn the ignition on, but do not start the car. 4. Only at the end turn on the VCDS.
After starting, we will see this window:
It is important to check the communication between the lanyard and the CAN bus of the car. This can be done in the “Options” section of the VCDS. The picture below shows the “Options” section:
In the window that opens, you do not need to change any parameters or check the available boxes. The only thing we need to do here is to click on the “Test” button. After the test, a window will appear with “OK” written against all the items. Click “OK” at the bottom of the window and save the changes by clicking “Save” or “Apply”. Now in VCDS you need to go to the “Select” section to go to the control units selection window. The Select menu looks like this:

5. Изменение режимов работы дворников: Дотирка капель. При использовании форсунок омывателя дворники делают три стандартных взмаха, останавливаются на 3-4 секунды после чего делают ещё один “дотирочный” взмах: Блок 09 (Cent. elec.) -> Coding-07 -> Long coding -> Byte 14 Bit 4 Зависимость скорости работы дворников от скорости авто. При практически полной остановке (Блок 09 (Cent. elec.) -> Coding-07 -> Long coding -> Byte 14 Bit 7
6. Изменение количества миганий комфортного режима указателя поворота (когда поворотник не включается в фиксированное положение, а лишь доводится до него): Блок 09 (Cent. elec.) -> Adaptation -> Lights: Comfort Turn Signals (Cycles) – instead of native 3 you can set from 1 to 5.
7. Двухэтапное открытие дверей: Блок 09 (Cent. elec.) -> Adaptation -> Central Locking: Selective (Single) Door Locking 0 – When you turn key the whole car will open 1 – 1st turn key – only driver’s door opens, 2nd – all others
8. Звуковой сигнал без зажигания: Блок 09 (Cent. elec.) -> Coding-07 -> Long coding -> Byte 17 Bit 3 This feature is not activated on all units. I personally could not activate it. Although it is possible that for this function is responsible for some other item (depending on the control unit).
9. Стоп-сигнал без зажигания: Блок 09 (Cent. elec.) -> Coding-07 -> Long coding -> Byte 17 Bit 2 Similar to the previous one, it may not be activated on your unit.
10. Тест стрелок панели приборов (Привет GTI и R-Line): Вопреки расхожим мнениям активация возможна и на обычных приборках (то есть родных VW Polo Sedan) Блок 17 (Instruments) -> Then there are two ways you can activate it. This is by no means a complete list of what you can do with the lanyard. Of course, you can also register RCD/RNS 510 and other multimedia systems, but I personally haven’t done it and won’t describe the process, as I’m incompetent.
