Engine and gear oils for VW Golf 7
The question about the applicability of lubricants and in particular what oil to pour in the case of Golf 7 generation is sometimes unnecessarily confusing. The reason is banal and unpredictable as the Russian history itself, the fate of its appearance in the Russian Federation.
It is necessary to begin with that the attempt to assemble Golfs of previous generations in Kaluga has failed miserably. Whatever Germans did, the quality of assembling was “below the plinth”, and this model is the face of Volkswagen Group, back then WAG took the quality seriously (later a simplified Polo was developed for the countries of the third world and they gave up on quality of assembling).
As a result, the assembly of Golf was discontinued, the next generation was imported from Germany, but the ruble exchange rate collapsed, sales fell and imports became unprofitable. Later WAG has changed its mind, and decided that the leading model of the concern should be presented in Russia at least symbolically, the import has resumed in the fixed equipment packages (for cheaper) and with 1.4 TSI engines.
As a result there are Golfs both officially imported, and gray imports from Europe. And they just switched to flexible change intervals and there was a collision with the oil: change it according to the European or local regulations?
To understand the issue, the possibility of extended oil change intervals is due, among other things, to the growth of fuel quality in Europe. In Russia the situation is worse, and low-quality fuel will knock out the additives in the oil long before the extended drain intervals.
That is to say you can use oil recommended for Europe, the oil from the factory in cars shipped to Russia is the same, but it will have to change it at local, fixed intervals, nominally it is 15,000 km, but in practice many owners prefer to change it after 7,500 km mileage.
What is the best oil to use?
Any oil that conforms to Volkswagen’s tolerances. For gasoline engines it is 502.00, for diesel engines it is 505.00. It is much more important not to run into a fake, in our conditions it is much more risky.
Owners of “European” Golfs can, for their own peace of mind, use oils with higher tolerance, 504/507, but the additives in these oils are quickly neutralized by sulfuric fuel and replacement at 7,500 kilometers is almost mandatory for them.
Choice of oil viscosity depends on the climatic conditions of the region of operation. The most common viscosity indexes for these engines are 0W-40, 5W-30, 5W-40. Generally the lower the atmospheric temperature the lower the first number in the index should be.
As examples of the oils that can be used, but not limited to:
- LIQUI MOLY Molygen 5W-40;
- Motul Specific 5W-30;
- Mannol 7715 5W-30;
- SHELL HX7 5W-30;
- ELF Evolution 5W-40.
In the engine
The amount of oil you need to change depends on the engine used in your car. For the most common Golf engines with a displacement of 1.2 l, 1.4 l and 1.6 l it requires 4 liters of oil.
Into the gearbox
Similar to the engines, the transmission oil and its amount of oil will be different for different gearboxes. For manual gearboxes and robotized DQ200 used on Golf, index of mineral oil in catalog G052512, synthetic oil will be under numbers G070726, G060726.It is allowed to replace with analogues, with viscosity 75W-80 and tolerance API GL4/5.
Oil volume for some gearboxes, l
0AH 5/1 | 2,2 |
02S 6/1 | 2,3 |
DSG 0CW (DQ200) 7/1 | 1,7 |
0AJ 6/1 | 2,3 |
Recommended oil change interval is 60,000 km, but it may be reduced to 30,000 km if driving in harsh conditions.
Cars with automatic transmissions after rebuild were not officially shipped, but the BAG approval G055025A2 is valid for Aisin automatic transmissions, and in practice they prefer to fill Toyota ATF T-IV, because of more humane price tag.
It is necessary to take into account that many manual transmissions are positioned by the manufacturer as maintenance-free, with the oil poured for the whole service life, therefore the replacement process, though not complicated, but very inconvenient because of the lack of technological holes provided by the manufacturer.
It is possible to fill in through the drain hole only 1,5-1,6 liters of oil instead of 1,9-2,3 liters. Then begins “kolkhoz”, who is able to do it:
- Pouring with the car tilted sideways, the easiest, but with a risk of falling of the car;
- pouring through the hole of pulled out gear shifting fork, requires extreme caution and accuracy while doing it, otherwise instead of changing oil you will have to reassemble the box itself;
- making a special drain plug with a check valve, allowing to pump oil under pressure above the level of the drain hole, the idea is great, but it strongly depends on the quality of the check valve manufacturing;
- operating at a reduced oil level, the most unimportant option. The gearbox-mechanic bearings are lubricated by the oil sprayed by the rotating lower row gears. With low levels and slow driving (e.g., pulling), the oil supply to the upper row will be insufficient and the bearings will become quite sad.
Bottom Line & Conclusion
To paraphrase the proverb, it is possible to say, you cannot spoil an engine with oil (with fresh oil, of course) and this is the case, when any doubts are solved in favor of replacement. The new high-quality oil will not make the engine or gearbox worse.
