How to make illumination in the interior door handles of LADA cars

On some foreign cars from the factory installed additional interior lighting, such as illumination of the door handles. At night, it makes the interior more attractive, and the operation of the car more comfortable. Let’s find out how to modify the interior of LADA cars with your own hands in the same way.

Process of modification is shown on example of Lada Vesta and Lada Granta. On other modern LADA cars (XRAY, Largus, Priora, Kalina, Lada 4×4) all actions are performed similarly. Examples of works on other LADA models you’ll find in the comments.

What do I need for work?

To perform the work, not many materials are needed. You will need only:

Auto door handle illumination

LEDs, one for each handle;
thin wires;
4 resistors of 500 ohms each;
terminals (8 female, 8 male).

The most beautiful thing will be the illumination of the door handles with blue LEDs, which give a soft and pleasant enough, not cutting the eye.

From the tools you will need the following items:

blowtorch;
knife;
screwdriver;
electrical tape;
pliers;
drill;
superglue;
ammeter.

Interior handle illumination with your own hands

For a long time I had the idea to make illumination of door handles, but I still could not decide on the realization.

But then the idea came to my mind to insert a resistor at the junction of door closing buttons so that the niches would not glow when the doors are closed. Let me tell you right away, the implementation of a pain in the ass, but a friend who is interested.

1. At the market buy frosted yellow LEDs, holders for them, socket contacts and resistors (I was advised 1kOhm, but need to think about it – read the end of the article). We remove the door handles and take them home.

3. We solder the resistance to the plus side of the LED (the longer one): 4. Insulate the legs from each other and pour glue from a glue gun inside, so that the LED does not fall out:

I say at once (in the photo is not clear) – the color of the lighting is exactly the same as the rest of the elements in the cabin.

Now I wanted to tell one more thing – these diodes burned out at me at different times in 1 – 6 months. That is why I recommend you to think at once about the protection of LEDs from reverse current pulses and voltage spikes. Installing additional diodes (for example 1N4007) on the plus wire is another option, but it is not as reliable as a stabilizer, so you have to decide for yourself =)

Preparatory work

Perform car door lighting with the logo is not difficult. To begin with you need to solder a resistor to each LED, and it does not matter which leg. The other leg of the diode and the free end of the resistor are soldered wires that have about 20 cm length, and then all soldering sites neatly insulated. To do this, you can use jumper cables, duct tape or other materials.

To the short wires connect the terminals (“moms”), and the “dads” will be connected to the long wires, which will then be connected to the car electrics. The length of such wiring must be set experimentally, depending on the model of the car and the way you choose to lay it.

Another one is my handiwork, may be useful for someone, it is not difficult to do, you only need a little time. When I installed the EURO-pens I wanted to light them up, so I soldered the circuit boards and installed them in the pens. Now they are always visible in the dark, beautiful and comfortable.

Wired the door, but did not connect them. I wanted them to light up when you open the car with the alarm. I also wanted them to light up longer after unlocking the car, took a circuit of soft damping and soldered, started testing, immediately did not like the fact that first bright lights, and then a long barely light up.

-I decided to connect a relay to this circuit, but it did not work, or whether the current is not enough, or something else that bonded another transistor which would control the scheme, and the relay worked, now LEDs are shining bright all the time and fade sharply, after 35 seconds, I was satisfied with it.

To apply the control minus to the circuit from the activator, used a 5v relay, for some reason, that’s how much comes to the activators. At the activator applied the 5 volt, relay actuates, the minus goes to the circuit and the LEDs light up)

Installation and connection

The next stage of the handmade equipment door handles backlit – the installation of LEDs. To do this, you need to remove the inner panel from the door and drill a hole in the casing of the handle according to the diameter of the LED. Here it is better to start working with a certainly smaller drill, gradually enlarging the hole, so as not to accidentally make it too big. You should make sure that the LED fits tightly into the hole you have made, though you can additionally mount it on the glue.

Interesting light styling

It is best to connect the LED illumination of the car handles to the car cigarette lighter. To do everything neatly, you will have to partially disassemble the trim not only doors, but also the front of the car, but it is almost always mounted on the latches, so this task is not difficult. As a result the lighting of each door will be made as a chain: two long wires connected to the cigarette lighter on one side and on the other side the “dad” terminals are connected to the “mom” of two short wires leading to the diode with a resistor.

If any of the diodes does not work as a result of the performed operations – polarity of connection is mixed up. To fix the problem is simple – it is necessary to swap the terminals.

The wrong polarity will not burn out the diode or resistor, so it is safe to experiment. Correct connection: “+” is fed through a resistance (resistor).

I’ve often read and seen some pics of door handle lightings. I could not see it but I really wanted to … Not to put off to a “long box” the meeting with beauty, and not wanting to overpay for second-hand handles with backlighting, I decided to light them myself.

As the light was chosen LED. But I was faced with the fact that the red ones are not available. In BMW all backlights are coral-red. The LEDs I was shown were either ruby red (like the Kremlin stars) or almost orange. I was missing the middle ground (maybe I was looking for it wrong…), so I got crafty. I used white diodes.

I bought regular SMD 5060 white flat diodes with warm color (there were also cool and white moon diodes) at 3 volt.

From 4mm plexiglass cut light guides and polished them on all sides. And to get the desired shade, I used a light filter of red Plexiglas, which later also polished, installed between the diode and the light guide.

Then, square holes were cut in the handles with a knife.

The light guide was inserted tightly into the holes. To the end of each soldered a light filter made of a red strip.

Putting LED with soldered wires and resistance to the light filter, filled the whole stuff with thermo glue from a gun.

I connected to all the batteries in the house (9 volts).

And satisfied with the result, went to install the handles in the car.

This is how they shine in their place. As you can see, the color tone is not at all different from the native light. The only disadvantage – it is more than I wanted, the brightness of the light. But I think matting with a fine sandpaper can be achieved by reducing the brightness of the illuminated area and a more uniform beam of light.

Well, as usual, could not find peace, so 2 days later completely redid the lights. Removed the old light guides with beveled corners. Cut new ones 2 times longer and polished only one facet, the one where the diode is attached.

Installation

Method №1: Independent installation of LEDs in the door handles.

Treat the LED with fine sandpaper, so that it shines not a dot, but a diffusing light.
Make a hole in a plastic door handle of the required diameter (for example, 6 mm), using a drill.
Install the LED in the hole, fix it with glue (e.g. thermo glue).

Make a hole in the recess behind the handle.
Fix the accessory with the inscription “Vesta” inside the door handle.

Connecting

Using LEDs in the cabin lighting, do not forget to use resistors when connecting.

Way #1: to the power windows illumination .

driver’s door: to the power windows block (blue with black stripe – +12V backlight, black – “ground”)
in other doors: red (#5) – +12V backlight, blue (#6) – “ground”.

+12V backlight – white (#4).
“Mass” – black (#5).

Method #2: universal .

The contacts of the ISO connector of the headset:

A6 – +12V when lights are on.
A8 – “mass”.

Cigarette lighter connector pinout (Lada Vesta):

black – ground.
blue – +12V after turning on the lights.

At first you need to disassemble the handle with screwdrivers. Next, we take the LED and remove the plastic case from it. At the end of the lamp you should see steel pins, which then need to be soldered to the electrical wires. To do this, you first need to strip the wires and put them on our terminals. By doing this, you will achieve maximum illumination, and it will be much more convenient to solder the devices. After stripping the wires on one side, turn them and do the same in the other part, put the terminals on these parts of the wires as well.

When doing the work with your own hands, it is worth taking into account one important nuance. Any light for the door consists of two parts. The first is the lighting device itself, and the second is a set of parts that power it. The lamp can receive its power both from the electrical part of the car, and from a separate electric card of the door. This is possible, provided that the latter is connected to the electrical power supply unit of the car. In the first case, you must calculate the length of wires so that you have enough not only for convenient connection of the lamp, but also for optimal placement of the wiring in the cabin of the car. For the second case, wires of short length are suitable, as their placement does not go beyond the door handle.

After connecting the wires, take an ammeter and check the quality of electrical wiring connection. I would like to remind you that if you are not confident in your abilities, it is better to use the help of a specialist.

3 The last step – installing the diode in the door handle

At the final step, we need to install the diode lamp. To do this, you need to try to fix the diode firmly in the handle, and then drill holes for the backlight with a drill. After that, connect the lamp to the wiring and check the operation of the entire system. Most experts advise directing the diode down the door, as in this case the backlight will well illuminate the handle and the part of the car around it.

Another useful tip is to connect the wires to the power window in the car door. In this case, the quality of the illumination will not change, but the lamp will not shine all the time. If you want the light to work all the time, it is better to connect it with an amplifier to the car radio or to the cigarette lighter.

Once you have decided what you want, it remains to connect the lights. Next, put protective plastic plugs on the small terminals and install the plastic LED housing.
