Replacing the rear door outer handle of a Polo Sedan
The replacement of the tailgate handle in the Polo Sedan is the top secret of the German car manufacturer.
DOOR DOOR OPERATION: consists of three steps: 1) Removing the latch cover. – Pull off the handle…
Unbolt the window glass guide channel, and, after releasing the single lock cable from the clamps, remove the guide channel from the door.
Reconnect the negative battery wire and check the operation of the electric window glass drive.
Most often difficulties arise in the winter, when the lock freezes, and you have to lose time to open it. It happens that the door handle loosens and the door either closes badly or gets jammed. With prolonged use, difficulty can arise with the lock cylinder, which over time is stuck inside the mechanism.
How to Remove Rear Door Handles on Polo sedan
If there is a need to replace the handle, then the entire procedure can be carried out independently without outside help. The important points here are knowledge of the design of the door handle and a clear adherence to the stages of removing the device from the door.

The process will not take much time and a large number of tools. The sequence of actions includes several steps. The first step is to remove the rear door trim.
Since under the upholstery is the wiring, the first thing to do is to remove the terminal from the battery. Use a screwdriver to pick up the armrest cover and remove it. We squeeze the lock and disconnect the wires from the control unit of the side mirrors. Do the same with the central locking switch block. Remove the two self-tapping screws holding the door trim.
Disconnect the cable from the outside handle. Then you need to disconnect the power window and trunk lid pads. Finally, remove the wires from the door lock pad and remove the trim.
The second step involves removing the tailgate lock switch, which is on every part of the car: Use a screwdriver to remove the padding from the lock switch. We remove the mechanism along with the pull rod. The link rod connects the lock cylinder to the internal locking mechanism via plastic ball joints; use a screwdriver to separate the lock cylinder ball joint.
Insert the handle assembly into the hole in the door, making sure the rubber seal is seated properly. Insert the ball joint of the rod rod back into the lock cylinder.
Make sure at this stage that the roller protruding from the back of the handle is connected to the release lever of the internal locking mechanism.
Reinstall the screws securing the handle. Before proceeding further, make sure that the handle reliably performs the function of opening the door. Insert the single lock switch cable into the clip of the upper part of the window glass guide channel, then bolt the strip inside the door into place, while simultaneously selecting the slack in the cable.
Insert the remainder of the cable into the clips on the guide channel, then connect the plug to the electrical connector.
Tools:
Reinstall the interior door trim panel Section Removing and Reinstalling the Interior Door Trim. Connect the negative battery lead and check the operation of the electric window opener.
If the window glass is jammed or moving abnormally slowly, recoil the screws of the guide channel to the edge of the door to allow alignment and then, after making adjustments, re-tighten. Remove the front door outer handle, see “Remove the front door handle”. The lock cylinder is attached to the handle assembly with two screws; remove the screws and remove the cylinder, removing the sealing washer if it is loose.
When reinstalling the cylinder, make sure that the sealing washer is properly seated in place. Locking Mechanism The procedure is similar for front and rear door locking mechanisms, except that when working on the rear door locking mechanism, the instructions regarding the locking cylinder must be omitted.
The door locking mechanism consists of two assemblies; one bolted on the outside to the rear edge of the door and includes latch components, the other bolted inside the door void and contains the single lock actuator and unlocking mechanism.

To remove the exterior assembly, open the door and remove the three screws securing the assembly to the door. Note that two guide bushings provide additional security.
Disconnect the negative battery wire and lead it away from the terminal. Disconnect the cables going to the single lock actuator and the “open door” switch from the electrical connectors. Label the cables for ease of reassembly at a later date. Unbolt the window glass guide channel, and after releasing the single lock cable from the clamps, remove the guide channel from the door.
The lock cylinder acts on the locking mechanism through a tie rod attached to each end by plastic ball joints. Use a screwdriver to separate the ball joint on the locking mechanism.
On the door latch release lever on the locking mechanism, disconnect the link rod going to the interior door handle. Remove the two screws securing the internal locking mechanism assembly, located on the rear edge of the door and on the lower edge of the door, near the single lock actuator.
Remove the lock assembly from the door along with the link rod attached to the internal lock release handle. Insert the locking mechanism into its place in the door and install the mounting screws.
Make sure at this stage that the unlocking lever of the locking mechanism connects to the lug protruding from the back of the outer door handle.
Independently remove the rear door handle of the Volkswagen Polo car
German automotive technology is not only a high level of craftsmanship, demonstrated to the consumer for more than a decade, but also a pedantic approach to global fashion trends. Each model is a sample of elegance and modernity. It is hard to tell at once what the perfect lines of the exterior of each “German” hides underneath.
Volkswagen Polo is one of the representatives of the German car concern, which has received huge support in the ranks of Russian motorists. High ground clearance, excellent electronics, corresponding to the climatic peculiarities of our country – this is only a part of the positive qualities of the model. Actually Polo hides much more than it seems at first sight. Perhaps only the masters working at the plant in Kaluga know all the secrets of the German company.
One of the secrets is the special design of the door handles, which often causes problems for many Polo owners. Most often, difficulties arise in winter, when the lock freezes and you have to lose time to open it. It happens that the door handle loosens, and the door either closes poorly, or it jams. In long-term use, difficulty may arise with the lock cylinder, which over time is seized inside the mechanism. The bottom line: appearances are deceiving, and, as practice shows, the internal mechanisms of the Polo door handle conceal many pitfalls.
If there is a need to replace the handle, then the entire procedure can be carried out independently without outside help. The important points here are knowledge of the design of the door handle and a clear adherence to the stages of removing the device from the door.
The process will not take much time and a lot of tools. Among the “helpers” you will need only TORX T20 and T30 wrenches, as well as a flat screwdriver.
The sequence of actions includes several steps. The first step is to remove the rear door trim.
- Since under the upholstery is the wiring, the first thing to do is to remove the terminal from the battery.
- Use a screwdriver to pick up the armrest cover and remove it.
- We squeeze the lock and disconnect the wires from the control unit of the side mirrors.
- Do the same with the central locking switch block.
- Remove the two self-tapping screws that hold the door trim.
- Use a screwdriver to pry up the surface and carefully move it aside – under it are the “bundles” of electrical wiring.
- Disconnect the cable from the outside handle.
- Then you need to disconnect the blocks of power windows and trunk lid.
- Finally, remove the wires from the door lock pad and remove the trim.
The second step involves removing the tailgate lock switch, which is found on every part of the car:
-
Use a screwdriver to remove the padding from the lock switch.
In the last step, you can proceed directly to the removal of the Polo door handle:
-
First you need to remove the lock cover: pull the handle, from below slip the tip of a flat screwdriver, lift the cover slightly so that it came out of the groove, and remove the part from the lock.
Installation of the new device is done in reverse order.
Unfortunately, some samples of Polo door handles were mounted on the car without the graspers. Therefore, to remove such a handle you need to use a special tool – VAG T10389. The tool has a narrow bent “hook”, which you need to insert into a small hole on the side and pick up the latch, fixing the handle body.
The tool is pulled back until the latch clicks. After that you can dismantle the handle as described above.
The cost of door handles on Polo varies depending on the manufacturer. On average, originals can be purchased at a price of 3,000 rubles apiece. Hands are sold samples costing from 1,200 rubles. You can also buy special chrome-plated stainless steel overlays to the fixtures.
