Electric winch from car windshield wiper and bicycle hub
For lifting weights to a greater height, you can make an electric winch from the windshield wiper motor drive. It can effectively handle loads up to 150 kg. It can be used for lifting building materials on the roof, removing small engines from cars, etc.
Materials:
- windshield wiper drive motor;
- Sheet steel with a section of 3-4 mm;
- front bicycle wheel hub;
- bicycle chain;
- steel tube d50 mm;
- 24 teeth sprocket with ratchet;
- sprocket for bicycle chain tensioner;
- 3 mm steel rope.

For this purpose, a circle with a radius of 12 mm is drawn on a sheet of steel with a locksmith’s compass. On its circumference to nakernite 6 points, observing between them the same distance.
Then using a drill, corresponding to the diameter of the roller of the available chain, it is required to drill holes on the points. In the center of the circle make a hole of a larger diameter, under the shaft of the gearmotor.
A bolt is inserted and the bolt is secured with a nut. The bolt is then inserted into the chuck of a screwdriver or drill. The next step is to grind the sprocket on an emery machine, while turning it with a screwdriver. In this case, the ground teeth will be identical.
To make the winch drum, parts from a bicycle wheel hub are used. First you need to cut 2 disks with a diameter of 90 mm from sheet steel, and make a hole in their center by 0.5-1 mm wider than the diameter of the existing bicycle axle.
Then you need to insert the bicycle axle into the drum, put the cups from the hub on the sides, assemble the bulk bearings, tighten the nuts and after alignment, weld the cups to the discs. Then a 24-tooth sprocket with ratchet is installed on the drum.
In the next step the winch body is made from sheet steel. First a plate is cut out to fit the motor gearbox. Holes are drilled in it for its fasteners and shaft.
After that a homemade sprocket is installed on the shaft. The drum axle is fixed a little to the side. The chain is stretched between the sprockets. To prevent it from sagging, a tensioner roller is also mounted on the plate.
After adjusting and checking the working part, the gearmotor and sprockets are removed. Remove the unwanted metal with a wheelbarrow
The holder for the drum axle is made of the same design as the fixing plate, a crosspiece is welded between them, and on top of it the eyes for the winch suspension.
To fix it securely, you need to make 3 holes in one disc. The cable is passed through them, and then its end is tightened in the loop. In this form, provided there is a tail of 3-5 cm, it will not tear out. The result is a lightweight compact winch that runs on a car battery.
If it is assembled using not bicycle parts, and more powerful, for example, from a seeder or other farm equipment, the load capacity and safety in overloading will increase. We lift a compressor weighing 60 kg.
No problem at all. When you change the polarity of the electric motor power, the direction of rotation of the winch coil also changes.

We found an old car wiper in the garage and decided to find a use for it. We take it apart, we need only two metal plates from it.
Also we will need another piece of steel wire with a diameter of about 4 millimeters. The edge of the wire need to make a tetrahedral shape of about 3-4 centimeters.
It’s easy to do, you take a grinder and grind it little by little, and if you have a sharpening machine it’s even easier.
Our two wiper blades are divided into four equal parts.
Now you need to weld or solder 4 plates from the wiper to the steel wire, I have a spot welder and I used it for this.
If you do not have anything like that, you can just solder with an ordinary soldering iron.
Next, we will need a plumbing hose, you can take a used, you can take a new one, it’s about 50 cm long and put the wire with the soldered plates through it. It should be about seven centimeters on both sides of the sleeve sticking out, one side of the wire, the other side of the plates.
Now, each plate unbend to the side and bend the edges with the pliers for a better grip on the objects.
