Volkswagen Polo – replacement of interior light bulbs. – Behind the Wheel magazine
Connecting the rear light to the front light and testing the system Before cutting the rear light into the headliner, it is advisable to check its functionality.
We will power the rear light fixture in parallel to the Polo sedan interior light so that it works absolutely independently from the front one. Full size Rear lamp connection diagram. All works perfectly! Thank god! The process of installing the rear light plug is the most responsible stage of the work, to cut the plug on the back of the ceiling upholstery.
To do this: – taking the measurements from our back light, transfer them to a piece of heavy paper and cut out a stencil with axial lines.
We will need the lines to center the stencil in place. Here it is worth noting that there is no right to make a mistake, and the saying “Measure seven times and cut off the interior plafond of a polo sedan once”, is just for our case.
In addition, I do not think it would be superfluous to use molar tape when marking the boundaries of the plafond, in order to keep the cleanliness of the upholstery. From the rear window is indented 57 cm, that is the distance from the rear window – by the bend in the headliner – to the nearest boundary of the plafond on the stencil.
At first we planned to install the back lamp on a regular place, but after consulting with my spouse we took a different decision, considering that where it stands it will be more comfortable for a child. Getting ahead of the story, I say the following, for us we have chosen the best place to install the taillight. Full size Having determined with the place of installation of the additional light, we draw the borders of our future plafond on the upholstery of the ceiling. Full size With a box cutter we cut a hole for the spotlight.
The process of removing the plafond I have described here. It is not so easy to remove the headliner – the upholstery is thick enough, even a helper had to do double duty. Full size From below we put the plafond in the hole we cut in the upholstery and fasten it with four clips to the plastic cover.

Installing the light plafond for the rear passengers of the Volkswagen Polo sedan
Originally planned to replace the native regular bulbs with LEDs, but the wife dissuaded, referring to the fact that the regular lamps emit a warm, soft, yellow light, which is comfortable for a child.

Positive aspects from the work done: – comfort and safety when standing or parking at night; – now it is easy to find the necessary thing on the back row; – no interference with standard wiring car; – additional plafond lighting looks like a regular element. I think this improvement is worth the money and will be especially useful for those who have small passengers on the back row.
Absolutely, my whole family is very happy. Both the version of the rear light itself and the place where it is installed more than suits us! The only thing I did not take into account is when driving at night, my three-year-old son asks the question: “Daddy, you made the light, why is it dark?
Connector housing – rub.
Installing the light plug for the rear passengers of the Volkswagen Polo sedan. For reading 6 min. Updated Oddly enough, car tours on the road are popular not only in the U.S., but also in our country. In the cabin, one of the first steps in the transformation can be the installation of lighting on the ceiling for the rear passengers. With an elegant plafond, the Spartan interior of the sedan will look stylish and lively. Well and we shouldn’t forget about practical advantage of interior’s equipment detail too. If God forbid something will fall into this “Dante’s hell” (a handle, keys or other trifle), it will not come back. At least until dawn.
Yes, extra. Good solution with the Hatchback plafond!
Headlamp Polo sedan put the same, just did not do any adapter, for the sense in it does not see the hole in the ceiling you’re not going to make and now I’m thinking – with limiters take directly from the rear doors.
Can you tell me why I need a splitter? And I have your crimp pin N 07, which need 3 pcs. And how do I change the bulbs in the rear light?
The passengers have the hardest time. Having used up the batteries of all electronic gadgets, brought with them on a long journey, they slowly but surely sink into a world of sadness and despondency.
Those who by nature are given a sound sleeplessness, can have a good rest on the Russian potholes. But what can passengers suffering from insomnia do? In all types of passenger transport, as long ago as the era of the USSR, small individual plafonds were designed for each seat.
Cabin lighting
With them, one could both read a book and do crossword puzzles. Interestingly, almost all Soviet illumination in train carriages or on board aircraft functions perfectly well to this day cabin light polo sedan. Naturally, once the passenger plafon polo sedan means installed personal lights, then the passenger cars just could not avoid the similar idea. However, if the front plafond is now necessarily present on the ceiling above the heads of the driver and passenger, then the backlight is not available to all car models.
Replacing the bulbs of the Volkswagen Polo sedan interior light
Especially if the plafond of the interior of the Polo sedan is about the Volkswagen Polo Kaluga sedan. As well as in any other “budget car” the passengers of the back row of seats are doomed to stay in darkness while driving at night. Well, or in twilight if to switch on a front plafond. The “Polik” still wants to grow up and grow up to expensive “German”. But taking into account that the “Kaluga” gradually acquires features of Jetta character, everything is not so unpromising for young “budget car”.
Besides in skilful hands of skilled polovedy the “ex” from Kaluga plant can easily transform from an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan. Provided, of course, presence of financial means. In the interior, one of the first steps in the path of transformation can become the installation of ceiling illumination for the rear plafond Polo sedan.
Installing the upper center pillar trims in place: When installing the trim in place, there is a good chance that the upper metal clip will come off from its place of attachment, so it is advisable to unfasten it a little beforehand to make it sit firmly in its place, or to fix it with something to hold it in place.
The strap height adjustment button should be correctly positioned in the adjustment mechanism. Full size The headlight is off.

Auxiliary light for the rear passengers
The desire to install additional light fixture in the back row. Without the light in the evening did not see anything, and the rear passengers (wife and 3-year-old son) are constantly complaining about the lack of light. So the installation of a light for the rear passengers has become a necessity.
Choice of light in the back row was not a question of choosing the light. Spotlight from the Polo Hatchback – both aesthetically and practically was closer to me. On the aesthetic side – this is purely my opinion, which no matter how rotten will differ from the opinion of another person. On the practical side, the plafond from Polo Hatchback more functional, and has five modes: 1. turn on (lit 2 sections) 2. turn on the forced left side (left section is lit) 3. turn on from limit switches (lit 2 sections when opening the door) 4. turn on the forced right side (right section is lit) 5. turn off (the plafond is not included when opening the doors)
Having a small passenger on the back row, in my opinion, this light is more preferable, because it can work independently of the front light, even if it is turned off. So we have: the front light is in my control, the rear light is in my wife’s control, but they are independent and both have exactly the same functionality.
The essence of the process is as follows: Determining the place of installation of additional lighting plafond on the back row, make a stencil on the previously acquired plafond and mark the borders of our future light on the headliner cut out a landing place. Further, to completely exclude any impact on the regular wiring and maintain its integrity, using crimp contacts and connector shells make a splitter. By means of this splitter connect in parallel the rear light fixture from the front fixture.
To install and connect the rear light fixture you need: – plafond cabin light VAG 6Q0 947 291 AY20 – plafond trim VAG 6Q0 867 599 G – connector housing 1T0 972 703 – crimp contact pin N 103 358 07 – 3 pcs – cable acoustic Rexant, 2×0,50 mm – 4 m – shrink wrap – cloth tape – office knife – Torx T20 wrench – plastic spades for salon disassembly
The splitter requires: – connector housing 893 971 633 – 1 pc – connector housing 4B0 971 993 – 1 pc – crimp pin N 906 844 05 – 3 pcs – crimp pin N 103 189 05 – 3 pcs
Next is the process of installing the additional light in the back and connecting it to the front light.
1. Prepare a splitter for connection The first thing to do after studying the front plafond and its power supply scheme is to prepare a splitter for connection. There are three wires coming to the front light: red-black – continuous plus; brown-black – continuous minus; brown-black – minus from door end switches.
Then assemble splitter: – we take three pieces of wire 150-180 mm long, from one end clean up carefully, crimp contacts crimp pin N 906 844 05 (“mom”) and lead them into previously obtained by us body flat socket VAG 893 971 633. This part of the splitter will be connected directly to the front lighting fixture in the place of the removed regular plug; – also carefully stripping the wires from the opposite side, then crimp contacts pin N 103 189 05 (“dad”) and lead them into the previously purchased by us housing connector VAG 4B0 971 993. This part of the splitter connects to the original connector of the front lamp wiring harness; – The next step is to run the wiring harness to connect the taillight. We take three wires 1.5-1.8 m long, carefully stripping them at one end, crimp contacts pin N 103 358 07 (“mom”) and put them into a previously purchased by us body flat socket VAG 1T0 972 703. This connector will be connected to the rear lighting plafond; – on the opposite side, the wires are also carefully stripped and hooked up to the middle part of our splitter.
During the process, do not forget to put on heat shrink tubing, which will provide insulation and will not let the contacts disconnect. Wrap all the wires with cloth tape. Our splitter is now ready for connection.
2. Connecting the back light to the front light and testing the system Before plugging the back light into the ceiling upholstery it is desirable to test its functionality. We will connect the back light in parallel with the front one so that it works absolutely independently from the front one. To do this: – Disconnect the wire from the “minus” terminal of the battery; – Remove the front light fixture and disconnect its rear side regular plug connector; – In place of the removed regular connector, put the connector VAG 893 971 633 our splitter; – the mating part of the splitter with connector VAG 4B0 971 993 put in previously extracted by us regular plug-in front light; – the third connector VAG 1T0 972 703 our splitter connected to the rear light plafond according to the following scheme left pin #1 – constant plus; center pin #2 – minus from the door limit switches; right pin #3 – constant minus;
– Connect the wire to the terminal “minus” battery and check the work of the lights in all modes. All works great! Thank God!
3. The process of installing the rear light fixture is the most responsible stage of the work, cut the light on the back of the ceiling upholstery. To do this: – taking the measurements from our back light, transfer them to a piece of heavy paper and cut out a stencil with axial lines. We need the lines to center the stencil in place;
– Having decided on the location of the additional light, we draw the boundaries of our future light on the ceiling upholstery and with a box cutter cut the mounting hole for the light. It’s worth noting here that there is no margin for error, and the saying “Measure twice and cut once” is just right for our case. In addition, I think it would be a good idea to use tape to mark the borders of the diffuser to keep the upholstery clean. From the rear window is indented 57 cm, that is the distance from the rear window – by the bend in the headliner – to the nearest boundary of the plafond on the stencil. At first we planned to install the back lamp on a regular place, but after consulting with my spouse we took a different decision, having considered that it would be more comfortable for a child where it stands. Getting ahead of the story, I say the following, for us we have chosen the best place to install the rear light;
Determined with the place of installation of additional light, we draw the boundaries of our future light on the headliner
– The next step to install the rear light and laying from it to the front plafond wire remove the headliner. A detailed process of removing it was described here;
– Then put the plug in the hole we cut in the upholstery and snap the four clips to the trim. It is not so easy to do – the upholstery is quite thick, I even had to use double force in the person of my assistant;
– At the end of laying and securing the braid of wires, assemble everything in the sequence reverse of the removal.
At the bottom we put the plug in the hole cut out in the upholstery and fasten it with 4 clips to the plastic cover.
Originally planned to replace the native regular bulbs with LEDs, but the wife dissuaded, referring to the fact that the regular lamps emit a warm, soft, yellow light, which is comfortable for a child.
