The heater Volkswagen Polo
Problems associated with the operation of the cabin heaters are well known to every Russian car owner. Did not bypass these problems and cars VOLSWAGEN Polo 5th generation. Problems with the heater begin to appear after 5 – 7 years of intensive operation.
At first, they are associated with the appearance of additional noise while turning on the heater fan, unpleasant odor. Subsequently, the temperature of the blown air may worsen, airflow distribution control may fail. Critical malfunctions such as failure of the heater fan and air preheater start appearing after 7-8 years of vehicle operation.
Functional principle of the heater Volkswagen Polo
The heater in Volkswagen Polo sedan cars is structurally combined in one system with air conditioning. Schematic diagram of the system air conditioner and heating system in the cabin is shown in the figure:
In this diagram directly to the heater system includes the heater fan 6, damper 8, heater radiator 9. The heater radiator is heated from the engine cooling system circuit. Thus, the temperature of the air that heats the cabin is directly dependent on the temperature of the engine coolant.
When the vehicle is moving, heated coolant flows through the radiator (with the valve open). Depending on the position of the heater fan speed switch, either ambient or interior air (also according to the option selected) flows past the radiator fins. The heated air flows through the directional flaps to the various areas of the passenger compartment.
Cabin heating system Volkswagen Polo, despite the relative simplicity of execution, often fails. First of all, this is due to the fact that in Russian climatic conditions the heater is constantly used for at least half a year of car operation in the annual cycle. Low quality of road surface, non-observance of the terms of routine maintenance also reduce the life of the heater.
Signs of malfunction, possible causes and corrective actions
|Signs of Malfunction||Causes of malfunction||Sequence of actions when repairing|
|No fan works when heater is on, heater blows no air||Failure of fuses and relays, which serve the heater fan, malfunction of wiring, electric heater fan failure, jamming of the fan||Check relays and fuses, check the heater motor for jamming, test the heater fan with a multimeter, check wiring and contacts. Replacement of the heater fan.|
|The fan blows badly, the revolutions are low, the interior is poorly heated.||The fan is defective, it has a great wear of bushings, cabin filter is clogged||Take off and replace cabin filter, perform scheduled works of heater fan (replace bushings, brushes, lubricate, etc.).|
|The fan blows with normal speed according to the position of switch, the air is cold, the heater does not warm||Failure of water circulation switch valve in the radiator, the radiator is clogged||Heater radiator flushing, replacement of valve, adjustment of drawbars|
|The fan only works at maximum speed, at medium and low speed the fan does not turn on||Resistor (rheostat) of the heater fan speed switch is defective||Change rheostat|
|Unusual smells in the vehicle interior||Inflamed electric wires, jammed electric fan, cabin filter is clogged, antifreeze leaks in radiator||Check wiring, engine, radiator tightness, replace the filter, clean the heater body from liquids and condensate.|
|The heater noises when turning on (the fan squeaks)||Wear of heater fan, foreign objects falling into it.||Dismantling of the heater construction, routine maintenance of the heater fan.|

Recovery of serviceability and replacement of defective units
In most cases operability of the heater fan can be restored. To do this, it is necessary to perform a set of routine works related to cleaning, lubrication, replacement of bushings and bearings, brushes.
In the case when the heater fan can not be restored, it should be replaced by an aggregate. It is possible to buy an inexpensive second-hand fan (code 6Q1819015G). Its price is about 2,000 rubles.
A slightly more expensive analogue will cost (about 2.500 rubles). Its part numbers 6Q1819015H, 05991151, 664103.
The original heater fan costs about twice as much.
Heater resistor, analog, part numbers 6Q0959263A, 34370, 30934370 will cost about 1,200 rubles (new). Used rheostat should not be purchased. It has a limited life, and may have almost expired by the time of purchase.
If, as a result of a serious malfunction or an accident, the design of the interior heater of the Volkswagen Polo is subject to aggregate replacement (completely), you can buy a contract heater at a price of 10,000 rubles.
In order to increase the life of the cabin heater, it is necessary:
- timely replacement of the cabin filter;
- If there are any signs of increase of extraneous noise of the heater’s fan perform routine operations of the electric motor;
- make sure that during the fan operation there is no extraneous odors in the cabin (in case of their appearance immediately identify and eliminate the cause);
use only quality antifreeze in engine cooling system to avoid furnace radiator clogging by scale products.
Possible causes, when the heater of Polo sedan heats badly
Harsh cold winter and unbearably hot summer – so, alternating one after another all year round, the seasons reign on the climatic map of our country. We motorists have to constantly adapt to the endless whims of the weather. In winter we as quickly as possible to sweep away the snow that fell overnight from the car, in order to quickly plunge into the seat, fending off the low temperature outside, and enjoy the warm air from the fan heating system.
In summer, in order not to suffocate with hot vapors of the hot sun, standing in a traffic jam, we switch the heater operation mode to the cold air blowing, turning the knob almost to the end, and completely open all the windows in the cabin.
But it also happens that in an effort to get warm as quickly as possible with the warm air of the heater, you notice that the fan either does not turn at all, or gives off cold air. Breakdown of heating system is a widespread problem for many modern foreign cars, not adapted to the climatic conditions of our country. And, as a rule, it appears at the most inappropriate moment – when the thermometer column drops below zero.
Why with the beginning of cold weather there is a difficulty and the heater ceases to warm? Let’s answer the question: what happens to the electronic devices, which are not exploited for a long time? At best the battery is discharged, at worst the device stops working.
The same story with the heater: who will turn on the heating system in summer? That’s why it stands the whole season without need. And when the owner remembers it at the first frosts, all resentment comes to mind: it refuses to heat.
Speaking seriously, the heating system has to be involved all the time. Otherwise, the result is one – big financial expenses for repair of the knot.
Volkswagen Polo sedan is the eternal struggle of motorists with the heating system. Numerous complaints of the owners of the “German” about the bad work of the heater and very slow heating of the interior and the engine cause only bewilderment. The car, designed specially for Russian road conditions to the benefit of weather fluctuations, heats worse than the VAZ “burzhuyka”. How is it possible?
Defective thermostat replacement and antifreeze check
There may be many reasons. One of the main culprits is a faulty thermostat of the Polo sedan. When the device is jammed, there is a constant circulation of coolant in a large circle, due to which the temperature of heating in the cabin drops sharply. When driving at low speed (in a traffic jam, for example), the heater can still produce a certain amount of heat, but when driving on the highway, the headwind will cool the radiator, and all the positive effect of the heater will come to naught. The thermostat malfunction can be cured in only one way – by replacing it.

On the Volkswagen Polo sedan body, there are two thermostats in the body of the water distributor. One of them is the main one, the other one is an additional one.
The procedure for replacing the device will not cause much complication, even for beginners. For the work you will need wrenches with heads and a pair of screwdrivers – flat and Phillips.
- Drain the working fluid from the system.
- Get under the hood and find the thermostat.
- On its cover there is a radiator hose, which should be taken aside by pressing on the loose ends of the clamp.
If the problem persists and the heating system does not warm, you should proceed to check the radiator.
The most popular problem with the heater of the Polo sedan is the formation of an air lock. It can arise for a variety of reasons: when trivial replacement of antifreeze, performed improperly, as well as a result of breach of tightness of the pump or the expansion tank lid.
More often usual flushing of cooling system becomes the main reason of heater choke. Before you start to remove the plug, you should check whether the warning light on the “dashboard”, which is responsible for controlling the temperature of the coolant, is working.
If it is good, then listen to the fan. Its incorrect operation indicates a malfunction in the radiator. Warm air coming from the heater – the fan is broken, cold – there is an air lock in the system.
The air is removed simply: switch off the engine, let it cool down, unscrew the cap from the expansion tank and restart the engine. In five minutes the cap can be put in place – the plug is removed. In general, during substitution of the antifreeze on sedan Polo it is recommended to “probe” radiator hoses with a hand sometimes for better distribution of liquid in the system.
Replacing the fan motor and checking the radiator
Much worse, if the salt of the problem lies in the malfunction of the fan, or the air blower. In this case, you will have to replace the electric motor, which is not cheap on the car market.
The sequence of steps for replacing the electric fan motor:
- Remove the “minus” from the battery terminal.
- Dismantle the glove box and its noise isolation: unscrew three screws and remove the flat screwdriver overlay on the dashboard, then remove the noise isolation curtain and, finally, slide the box cover from its axes.
If the radiator is still not warming properly after replacing the blower motor, the solution to the problem must be found in the system itself. The worst diagnosis is the “death” of the radiator. Poor heat output and engine overheating are the main criteria for malfunction.
The reason for their occurrence is an irresponsible approach to heater operation. Like any other vital car unit, the radiator needs a thorough care. Periodic flushing of the “battery” is one of the important steps that every motorist should take. However, if any sighted person can see the external dirt, not every motorist guesses about internal “surprises”. Exactly the clogging of internal surfaces of a car radiator becomes more often a stumbling block in proper work of the heater.
It is possible to wash off external dirt from “battery” of Polo sedan with ordinary water under slight pressure. When using special equipment like “Kerher”, it is important to observe the distance – not less than 15 cm from the radiator surface and a weak water pressure. Another option – a standard soaking in water with a cleaning solution. This method is more effective, because not only external deposits, but also internal dirt is washed off the device.
The two main sources of contamination of the “insides” of the heater are a plaque of rust and used engine oil, which can penetrate the system as a result of damage to the power unit.
You can check the internal parts of the radiator of the Polo sedan for clogs by touch. The areas where there is no heating will remain cold. An important recommendation – during such a check, in no case touch the parts of the radiator after a long drive, because you can get serious burns. The procedure should be performed immediately after turning on the engine.
The most noticeable indicator of the presence of contamination in the system is the cloudy color of the coolant. If the antifreeze has “gone bad”, it should be changed as soon as possible. During the replacement procedure do not be overzealous: as soon as the color acquires its original tint, it means the system is filled with pure antifreeze. Frequent “rinsing” with flushing may break the protective film created by the coolant’s anti-corrosion additives.
The surface can be damaged by caustic soda, which is often used in industry and for household purposes. Sediments from alkali will corrode the internal “organs” of the radiator, which will lead to costly repairs.
At last, if the heater does not warm or works poorly after all procedures, there is only possible the saddest outcome for a “German” owner – the radiator body is damaged. The main symptom of the “disease” is the leakage of antifreeze from the system.
In this case, the repair of the cooling element will cost the owner of the Polo sedan a pretty penny. Self-work, of course, will save finances, but the process is rather labour-intensive: it will be necessary to dismantle a front part of the automobile – to take off a bumper and headlights, to dismantle an air inlet and a cooling system fan. The work will take more than one hour of free time.
