Replacing the tail light on a Volkswagen Polo sedan

One of the best-selling cars in Europe, the Volkswagen Polo, produced by the German auto giant since 1975, is preparing for a rebirth. Not just a restyling, but the next, sixth generation, is expected in the new 2016.

Pedantic Germans prepare grand surprise for all fans of German brand B-segment. With each time there is something new and unusual.

As regards lighting equipment design, the Germans have no equal. The headlights and taillights are designed with special care from the highest quality and reliable materials. There is no sense to speak about design. Each restyling is a completely new note of design art, made in accordance with the standards of fashion trends.

Rear lamp

The painstaking work on the design of Polo’s rear dimensions is worth mentioning separately. Even in the old sedan model, the quality LED technology used in most modern foreign cars is used. The updated version of the Polo will feature even more elegant LED lights.

Quality is very good, but even reliable German technology can fail. However, there is nothing unnatural in replacement of lamps of “German”. Each car sooner or later is exposed to repair of illumination elements. It is possible, of course, to address the service center and pay a solid sum of money for replacement of bulbs, and it is possible to change everything independently.

Another thing is if the car was involved in an accident, and the glass body is cracked. Then replacing the lamp will cost a little more than buying the bulbs. Anyway, the technique of removing and installing the part is the same.

The construction of the taillight

Before proceeding with the procedure, you should carefully study the design of the rear lamp of the sedan. On the outside is the body itself. Underneath it are four bulbs:

  • The parking light bulb is a 5-watt clear bulb – it is the smallest and is located approximately in the center of the housing.
  • The brake light bulb is a 21W single pin – it “hangs” over the clearance.
  • Rear direction-indicator lamp is yellow with a 21W mixed base – located under the clearance.
  • The reversing light bulb is also 21W – at the very bottom of the design.

All components are attached to a special metal block, which is held in place by a screw with a lock, located inside the luggage compartment.

The construction of the lantern

If the light does not work, it does not mean that the bulb is blown. Probably the reason is in the fuse box, located in the front panel on the driver’s side. Therefore, you should not immediately “pounce” on the rear lamp and disassemble the construction piece by piece.

If it is still about the bulb, then when replacing, experts recommend using either originals, or analogs with the appropriate parameters and special markings on the socket of the device.

On no account should you perform the replacement with your bare hands. Grease stains from your fingers remain on the surface of the lamps, deteriorating the performance of the dimensional light.

You should also not forget about the elementary safety rules, which include setting the parking brake to fix the car, switching the lights to the 0 position, switching the gear on the “mechanics” or mode “P” on the automatic transmission.

Replacement Process

The replacement procedure does not require professional skills and a large amount of time:

  1. Open the trunk door.
  2. There is a special valve inside on the side of the upholstery, which you need to pull towards yourself.

Pull back trim flap

Pull out catch

Detach the pads

Unscrew the screw

Remove the lamp

Unscrew the clips

Remove the bracket

Change light bulbs

After the replacement, you should test the operation of the dimmer. If it still doesn’t light up, there could be several reasons. At best, it is simply a bad contact of the lamp with the “socket”. At worst, the bulb has burned out again, or there is a problem with the connector.

The cost of sedan tail light bulbs is inexpensive – about 200 rubles, depending on the brand. Typically advised LED “corn” W5W with an operating voltage of 10-15V. Their luminous intensity is 135 Lumens, the angle is 320 degrees.
