I bought WESTER MSW600 to power the fridge ATLANT (100 watts) when power failure. I tested it with 6ST55 battery. My fridge was started and worked 15 minutes in standard mode. Disconnected from the thermostat and turned it off. The radiator of the refrigerator (at the back) was warm as usual. Special features: The inverter squeaked briefly when the refrigerator started.

Converter from 12 to 220 with my own hands

I decided to dedicate a separate article to the manufacture of DC AC step-up converter to 220V. Of course, it is remotely related to the topic of LED projectors and lamps, but this mobile power supply is widely used at home and in cars

Budget models of car inverters 12 to 220 volts are not particularly good sine wave output. Models helpers on 2000W, 3000W, 5000W with pure sine wave are too expensive, although they differ only by 6 transistors on the output. Make a converter from 12 to 220 with your own hands at 300-500 watts is not very rational, and make a powerful profitable, the cost in the store will be from 5000 rubles.

Assembling options

There are 3 optimal ways of making a 12 to 220 inverter with your own hands:

  1. Assembling from ready-made blocks or radio assemblies;
  2. making from an uninterruptible power supply;
  3. Using amateur radio circuits.

The Chinese can find good radionics and ready-made units for assembling DC to AC 220V inverter. This method will be the most expensive in terms of price, but it takes a minimum of time.

The second way, this upgrade uninterruptible power supply (UPS), which, without a battery in large quantities sold on Avito and cost from 100 to 300rub.

The most difficult option is to assemble from scratch, without radio amateur experience can not do without. You will have to make printed circuit boards and select components.

The construction of a voltage converter

Let’s look at the design of an ordinary step-up converter from 12 to 220. The principle of operation for all modern inverters will be the same. High-frequency PWM controller sets the mode of operation, frequency and amplitude. The power part is made on powerful transistors, the heat from which is removed to the body of the device.

At the input of the converter from 12 to 220 there is a fuse that protects the car battery from a short circuit. Next to the transistors is a temperature sensor, which monitors their heating. In the case of overheating of the 12v 220v inverter, an active cooling system consisting of one or more fans is activated. In low-cost models, the fan can run continuously, not only at high load.

Power transistors at the output

Sine wave

The waveform at the output of an automotive inverter is generated by a high-frequency oscillator. The sine waveform can be of two types:

  1. modified sine wave;
  2. pure sine, pure sine.

Not every electrical device can operate with a modified sine wave, which has a rectangular shape. Some components have a change in operating mode and can get hot and start to mumble. You can get a similar thing if you dim an LED bulb that is not dimmable. It starts to crackle and flicker.

Expensive DC AC step-up converters for 12v 220v have a pure sine output. They are much more expensive, but electrical appliances work fine with them.

Assembling from a UPS

To avoid reinventing anything and buying off-the-shelf modules, you can try a computer uninterruptible power supply, abbreviated UPS. They are designed for 300-600 watts. I have Ippon for 6 outlets, connected two monitors, one system, one TV, three surveillance cameras, video surveillance system. Periodically put in operating mode by turning off the mains 220, so the battery is discharged, otherwise life will be greatly reduced.

Colleagues electrician connected a regular car acid battery to the UPS, worked fine uninterruptedly for 6 hours, watching soccer at the cottage. The UPS usually has a built-in gel battery diagnostic system that detects low capacity. How it will react to a car battery is unknown, although the main difference is the gel instead of acid.

UPSs are mainly designed for short-term operation when 220V is missing from the socket. For long continuous operation it is very desirable to put active cooling. Ventilation is useful for stationary version and for a car inverter.

Like all devices, it will behave unpredictably when starting the engine with the load connected. The car starter sags a lot of Volts, at best it will go into protection as when the battery fails. At worst there will be spikes on the 220V output, the sinusoid will be distorted.

There are no gel batteries! They use AGM batteries, in which the normal electrolyte is “soaked” in a glass cloth between the plates (Google to help). “The battery diagnostic system” in the UPS treats a car battery as if it were its own.
