LED stroboscope for ignition timing allows you to quickly and accurately set the optimal ignition timing advance angle (ignition timing) in the car. This parameter plays an important role in the correct operation of the engine. A slight shift in ignition timing leads to a loss of power due to increased fuel consumption and engine overheating.
Despite the large range of industrially produced devices for checking and installing the ignition timing, the relevance of creating a stroboscope with their own hands has not lost its meaning even in our days. The presented scheme of a homemade stroboscope for the car does not require adjustment after assembly and is made of available parts.

The circuit was developed and presented in the ninth edition of Radio magazine back in 2000. However, due to its simplicity and reliability, it remains relevant today.
In the circuit diagram of the stroboscope for cars can be divided into 4 parts:
- The power circuit, consisting of the switch SA1, diode VD1 and capacitor C2. VD1 protects the circuit elements from erroneous polarity reversal. C2 blocks frequency noise, preventing triggering failures. To turn the power on and off, the switch SA1 is used, any compact switch or toggle switch will do.
- The input circuit, which consists of a sensor, capacitor C1 and resistors R1, R2. The function of the sensor is performed by the alligator clip, which is attached to the high voltage wire of the first cylinder. The elements C1, R1, R2 are a simple differential circuit.
- Trigger microcircuit, assembled according to the circuit of two single-type vibrators, which form on the output pulses of the set frequency. The frequency-retaining elements are resistors R3, R4 and capacitors C3, C4.
- Output stage assembled on transistors VT1-VT3 and resistors R5-R9. The transistors amplify the output current of the trigger, which is reflected as bright flashes of LEDs. R5 sets the base current of the first transistor, and R9 eliminates the failure of the powerful VT3. R6-R8 limit the load current flowing through the LEDs.
Principle of operation
The strobe circuit is powered by a car battery. At the moment the switch SA1 closes, the trigger DD1 goes to its initial state. The inverse outputs (2, 12) are high potential and the direct outputs (1, 13) are low potential. Capacitors C3, C4 are charged through appropriate resistors.
A pulse from the sensor, passing through the differential circuit, arrives at the clock input of the first single-oscillator DD1.1, which causes it to switch over. It starts the recharge of C3, which ends after 15 ms with another trigger switching. Thus, the single-oscillator reacts to the pulses from the sensor, forming rectangular pulses on the output (1). The duration of the output pulses from DD1.1 is determined by the ratings of R3 and C3.
The second single-oscillator DD1.2 operates similarly to the first one, reducing the duration of pulses at the output (13) by a factor of 10 (to about 1.5 ms). The load for DD1.2 is an amplifying stage of transistors, which are opened for the pulse time. The pulse current through the LEDs is limited exclusively by the resistors R6-R8 and in this case reaches a value of 0,8 A.
Do not be frightened by such a large value of current. Firstly, its pulse does not exceed 1 ms, with a duty cycle of at least 15. Secondly, modern LEDs have much better technical characteristics compared to their predecessors from the year 2000, when this scheme first gained practical application. Back then, you had to look for LEDs with a light intensity of 2000 mcd. Now a white LED (Light-emitting diode) C512A-5 type from the company Cree with an angle of dispersion of 25 ° is able to produce 18000 mcd at a constant current of 20 mA. Therefore, the use of super-bright LEDs will significantly reduce the load current by increasing the resistance R6-R8. Third, the time of use of the strobe usually does not exceed 5-10 minutes, which does not cause overheating of the emitting diode crystals.
Printed Circuit Board and Assembly Parts
The homemade stroboscope for the ignition setting can be assembled both on inexpensive domestic radio elements, and on more precise imported elements. Below is a board using domestic components for pin mounting.

Diode VD1 is a KD2999B or any other diode with a small forward voltage drop. Capacitor C1 should be a high voltage capacitor with a capacity of 47 pF and a voltage of 400V. Capacitors C2-C4 are non-polar KM-5, K73-9 series at 0.068 uF 16V. All resistors except R4 are MLT or planar type with ratings as shown in the schematic. R4 trimmer resistor is SP-3 or SP-5 type for 33 kOhm.
Trigger TM2 is better to use 561 series, which is characterized by high noise immunity and reliability. But you can replace it with 176 and 564 series chips, considering their pinout. Transistors VT1-VT2 will do KT315 B, C, D or KT3102 with a high gain. Output transistor – KT815, KT817 with any letter prefix. For HL1-HL9 it is better to use super-bright LEDs with a small stray angle. They are placed on a separate board, three in a row. If you do not have any circuit parts, you can replace them with more modern analogs, improving the board a bit.
It is convenient to place the ready-made strobe control board and the board with LEDs in the case of a portable flashlight. It is necessary to provide a hole in the housing for the regulator R4, and as SA1 you can use the regular switch.
Adjustment
The circuit includes a trimmer resistor R4, which can be adjusted to achieve the desired visual effect. Turning the knob you can observe that decreasing the current pulse leads to a lack of illumination of the marks, and increasing it leads to blurring. Therefore, when starting the strobe for the first time, you must find the optimum flash duration.
The length of the shielded wire from the circuit board to the sensor should not exceed 0.5 m. A 0.1 m copper conductor soldered to the central core of the shielded wire will work as a sensor. At the moment of connection, it is wound on the insulation of the high-voltage wire of the first cylinder of the car, making 3 turns. To improve noise immunity, the winding is made as close to the candle as possible. Instead of copper conductor, you can take a clamp type “crocodile”, which should also be soldered to the central core, and its teeth slightly bent inside, so as not to damage the insulation.
Setting the ignition timing with a stroboscope
Before we look at how an automotive stroboscope works, we need to understand the stroboscopic effect. If you illuminate an object moving in the dark for a moment with a flash, it will appear to be frozen at the point where the flash occurred. If you put a bright mark on a spinning wheel and illuminate it with bright flashes that coincide in frequency with the speed of the wheel, the location of the mark can be visually recorded during the flashes.
Before adjusting the vehicle’s ignition timing, two marks are applied: a movable one on the crankshaft (flywheel) and a stationary one on the engine housing. Then the sensor is connected, the stroboscope is powered and the engine is turned on in idle mode. If the marks coincide during the flashes, the ignition timing is optimal. Otherwise, adjustments should be made until they coincide completely.
The presented stroboscope for ignition adjustment, assembled with your own hands, will allow for a few minutes to debug the ignition system of the car. As a result of the adjustment will increase the efficiency of the engine and increase its service life.

1) Power supply 12V or car battery (+ crocodiles if you connect it on a straight ~15 rubles each)
2) LED strip or LED lights.
3) It is desirable to put a fuse for 10-15A, ~5-20 rubles
4) Mama terminals for fuse/relay contacts ~3 rubles pcs.
5) Turn signal relay from gazelle 494.3787 – 2 pcs, ~120 rubles pcs.
6) Variable resistor of 20 kOhm – 2 pcs, ~50 rubles pcs.
7) Capacitor 25V 330 μF ~5 rubles pcs.
You can take acoustic wires 0.5 mm2, 10-15 rubles per meter.
The relay needs a little work, open it, and solder out the resistor (1) and the capacitor 50V 4.7 μF (2)
Solder our 25V 330 μF capacitor in its place, and from the other side solder the wire for the variable resistor, it will be necessary to output the resistors in a convenient place, they set the strobes

11) Important! When connecting the LEDs must be soldered between + and – resistor of 1.5 kOhm! Otherwise the continuity check of the turn signal lamp is triggered and the LEDs will not work! The way to cut through the 7th leg of the timer K1055XB4 somehow did not work

I had a lot of doubts, but decided to be out of the woods! Let’s revive the tradition to share our handmade stuff on Fridays!

But I want to please the child! So I searched the apartment. Pulled out a couple of stashed boxes. After a raid on a stationery store, was the owner of two packs of foaming, glue and paint. And my husband brought a whole bag of glue sticks for the gun. The gun was already there, if anything.
The baby chose the basic colors for each room. What would be in the rooms was her choice, too.
My day looked funny: in the morning on the way to the nursery gathering wishes, then chores around the house ( no more than 2 hours) and 8 hours of work on the house. In the evening, my husband would just take away the knife and pencil and run me off to rest.
