Volkswagen Teramont rims and tires: options

Tire and rim sizes on the 2018 Volkswagen Teramont

The 2018 Volkswagen Teramont 2.0T 186 is fitted with 8Jx18 ET34 wheels assembled with 245/60 R18 105T tires as standard. Where:

  • 8J is the rim width in inches;
  • 18″ – tyre diameter in inches;
  • ET34 – wheel offset in millimeters.

The marking of the vehicle tire 245/60 R18 decodes as follows:

  • 245 – profile width (cross-section of the tire) in millimeters;
  • 60 – profile height in percent of its width;
  • R – radial winding of the cord;
  • 18 – tire seating diameter in inches.

In addition, tyres may be marked with information about their load capacity and speed parameters – load index and speed index. The load index is a two or three-digit number, the speed index is indicated by Latin letters, for example 105T:

  • 105 – maximum permissible tire load of 925 kg;
  • T – maximum permissible speed of a vehicle of 190 km/h.

Using the recommended tire sizes will help avoid steering problems, safety and other difficulties. What sizes are not standard? Be guided by the data in the table, it shows the possible permissible alternative sizes for tuning. Although other options are possible, which we have not described in the table. For example, wider disks with the same diameter. Or to put disks of the same width, but larger diameter, which is quite popular among car owners. The choice of disks is huge, you can find instances with the same parameters, but with the offset 1-2 millimeters more or less. It is impossible to enumerate all the variants.

The dimension of all types of wheels is the same – 5×112. Thus, all the disks are mounted on five bolts and the distance between them is exactly one hundred and twelve millimeters. The diameter of the wheel hub is 57.1 mm.

Standard tire pressure – 2.3 MPa.

Expert advice

When choosing a tire for your car, you should first of all be guided by the manufacturer’s instructions. Ask yourself a few questions.

  • On what roads will your car be mainly exploited?
  • Do you need an increased cross-country ability?
  • How much of the journey will be city roads and how much highway?
  • Will the car transport heavy loads?

The answers to these and similar questions will help to determine which tire parameters you need to pay special attention to.

How to choose the right rims for the 2018 Volkswagen Teramont?

There are 3 types of wheel rims:

  • Stamped (economical price category) – made from a sheet of iron by stamping on the press.
  • Alloy – made by “casting” (more reliable than stamped).
  • Forged (the highest quality and more expensive than the previous ones) – made of light alloys by punching at high temperatures.

The choice depends on financial possibilities. However, you should keep in mind that the quality of the road surface, on which you have to drive every day, must also be considered.

So, if you hit a hole, a stamped disc will bend and will not cause damage to the tire, and forged or cast can break it. There is a possibility that the cast disk may burst or split.

It should also be noted that repairing a “stamped” wheel is less expensive than repairing cast or forged wheels. But wheels with quality cast and forged rims are less likely to kill the suspension because they are lighter and have better geometry (better balanced).

The same wheels may or may not rub the tires on the same car – a “camber adjustment” will help.

What is the tire pressure?

It is the driver’s responsibility to check the tire pressure at all times. This will avoid the standard problems associated with the operation of the vehicle. Non-nominal tire pressures are often the cause of:

  • impaired steering;
  • Uneven tread wear.

Often the car owner himself reduces the pressure in the wheels of his own vehicle. Thus, the load on the suspension is reduced, the car is easier to “pass” various bumps in the road. But it is worth noting: reducing the pressure even by 0.1 MPa leads to serious problems. The main problems are:

  • increased fuel consumption;
  • rapid wear of the outermost segments of the tread;
  • the car becomes less maneuverable.

No less problems are caused by overinflated wheel. The central part of the cylinder begins to wear down quickly. In addition, at ambient temperatures of more than 60 degrees Celsius, the tire can simply explode. Which will result in driving into the oncoming lane of traffic.

Volkswagen Teramont wheels and tires: options

Volkswagen Teramont wheels and tires: size, service

Despite the fact that the scheduled start of sales in the spring was postponed indefinitely, a certain interest in the Teramont remains, including the question of what tires and rims will be offered by Volkswagen to the Russian buyer.

In many respects such interest is caused by the reviews of the Teramont bought in previous years, from them there is a paradoxical situation: usually if the disk radius increases, it means the improvement of steerability.

But Tremont is not a brisk small-capacity car; the size will not allow it to “hustle” between lines all the same; from here filigree steerability is not especially demanded.

Owners do not put such problems before it. And here is the opposite side of big disks, the necessity of low-profile rubber application, for a possibility to meet the geometrical parameters of a wheel, leads to excessively detailed transfer of all possible asphalt defects to a body, which sometimes irritates the owners a lot.

As a result, there is a situation where the driver, changing the winter together with tires and wheels, from 20″ to 18″, gets more comfort when driving and in the spring changes only tires, leaving discs with a smaller radius.

In this regard, Russians are not alone, a similar situation in the North American continent, where the Teramont came from, to the point that local dealers immediately offer as additional equipment and at all 17″ wheels, not included in the factory equipment cars.

Wheels and equipment

For the Russian market will be available in four possible sets:

All original discs are made of aluminum alloy, steel stamped are not available even at extra cost. The exact models of disks are still unknown, but you can see what they put on the Teramont, aka Atlas in the U.S..

The alternate rims options are.

20-inch Silver Angled Split rims with 5 spokes

The 20-inch Silver Angled Split 5-spoke Volkswagen rims have a spectacular five-spoke angled design that complements your Volkswagen model.

Size: 20″x 8″ ET 34. Tire size, 255/50 R20.

Prisma

Volkswagen’s 18-inch alloy wheels in Diamond Silver color feature a unique fork that gives your car an off-road look. The tire size is 245/60 R18.

Volkswagen’s 21-inch two-tone machined rims feature a 5-spoke design to fit your Volkswagen model. Size: 9 x 21 H2 ET34. Tire size is 265/45 R21.

Dynamic hubcaps.

Make your original Volkswagen rims the center of attention with these dynamic center caps. The dynamic center cap design allows the Volkswagen logo to self-align and stay upright while the wheels and tires rotate. Installation is easy. Remove the original center caps and replace them. Comes in a set of 4.

Teramontas in previous years were equipped with Kumho tires, the attitude of the owners was mediocre, some were more or less satisfied, some wanted to “ride them out” and forget them. Good wear resistance was one of their pluses, the disadvantages – stiffness and noisiness.

This choice is not surprising, in the U.S. they cost less than $ 200 each, while the warranty is given for 60,000 miles (96,000 km), so for the frugal driver is just a gift. On top of that, they’re all-season, and tire service every fall and spring costs money, too. Other options:

  • CrossContact LX Sport;
  • Goodyear S1;
  • Pirelli Scorpion Zero;
  • Goodyear EagleSport AllSeason;
  • Michelin Premier;
  • Nokian Hakkapeliitta.

Americans prefer all-season tires, but as applied to the territory of the former USSR, such an approach probably makes sense only in some regions. But in areas with a sharply continental climate, especially in Siberia with freezing winters nearly half the year, all-season tires are hardly the best choice.

Winter tires

These are the real problem. If you are not in a big city, you have very little chance to find winter tires of needed size. Even in the catalogs of huge Internet-stores such sizes are still to be found. Sometimes it is the other way round, when you have to pick up disks for the tires of similar size.

The DUNLOP Grandtrek Ice 02 got good references to the Teramont, though its size is “close”. As the owner notes, the car became noticeably softer and more comfortable, while the controllability has not decreased noticeably. Unfortunately, there are almost no reviews about usage of different winter tires, and it is impossible to compare rubber models.

In Europe, Volkswagen itself equips cars with summer tires, stressing that the winter ones are the owner’s responsibility. With this in mind, many thought that VW has removed itself from the winter problems, allowing the owners to decide on their own.

In fact, there is a catalog of recommended for winter tires, but it is designed for Europe and models are presented for the local climate (European type), and for the greater Russian Federation needs arctic (Scandinavian) type.

But in any case, the Teramont is not there, so it is still up to the owners to decide the issue of rubber.
