The developers of Volkswagen Tiguan combined in one car quite a fast passenger car, passable compact crossover, as well as a family car with a roomy trunk.

And if we consider the evolution of cargo capacity of the crossover, since 2007, they have undergone changes along with the changes of the two generations of Tiguan, when the first one was designed exclusively for the city. And as to the second generation, it is family in base configurations, and in top configurations – youth, both by age and spirit.

In other words, intended for those from our garage community, who likes active rest, and mainly on natural landscapes and sports driving.

The first truck generation of the Volkswagen Tiguan

Becoming for the concern the debut in a class defined as CUV or SUV, but by default used primarily in urban or capital road conditions, the compact SUV model at the first stage of its promotion nevertheless possessed:

Thus, the luggage evolution of the first generation crossover has undergone changes in the minimum parameters in the form of increasing, from 256 and up to 470, and then up to 615 liters of cargo capacity. And, as for the maximum cargo capacity, when the seats are folded, on the contrary, the trend had a downward curve – in the form of volume decrease from 2 thousand 610 and up to 1 thousand 655 liters. With an intermediate trunk parameter of a minimum of 1 thousand 510 liters.

Restyling (2011-2016) period of promotion of the compact crossover was mainly concerned with updates to the exterior elements, without affecting the cargo capacity, which was inherited from its predecessors.

The second luggage-hauling generation of the compact crossover

By 2017, VAG concern, having one of the first places in sales of compact Tiguan nevertheless creates for the market the second generation of the model, trying to surpass its predecessor literally in all respects. Except for luggage capacity, and also a clearance.

The matter is that the parameters of a trunk were frozen at the level of 615 in a usual condition and within 1 thousand 655 liters in folded position of seats. That turned out to be enough for Tiguan could be used both as a family car, and as a car for business.

In this case, the size of the clearance for versions designed for the city, mainly with 1.4 TSI engines, both 125 and 150 horsepower and drives to the front, became equal to 170 millimeters. Whereas all-wheel drive Tiguans got the former 200 millimeters of road clearance.

However, despite the fact that in 2018, the new model received an updated modular MQB body platform with increased parameters, both length and width all this mainly went to improve comfort, both for the pilot and navigator, and passengers.

In addition, MQB allowed:

• increase the wheelbase parameter by 77 millimeters;
• To increase the length of the bogie itself, and therefore the body of the crossover (by 26 millimeters according to one data, and according to others – by 70 millimeters) with the possibility to place seven seats in the cabin;
• to appear a seven-seat model Tiguan Allspace (both for China and Mexico). By the way, it turns out that this crossover is not intended for our small Russian user audience. And for those countries, where the birth rate is still higher than the Russian indicator.

Nevertheless, it is impossible to tell that the new platform of Tiguan has added cargo opportunities. Moreover, in a normal condition of the trunk the model with seven seats now has only 230 liters of cargo volume.

However, seven-seater Tiguan possesses more weighty cargo abilities in those cases, if to fold one back row, the luggage volume will be 720, and if to fold two rows of seats – it will be equal to 1 thousand 920 liters. Or will have an intermediate value, if at least partially transform the seats to carry long goods.

Tuning: rack on rails

To increase the luggage potential of the Volkswagen Tiguan there are proposals on the market for the device of roof racks or rails. Herewith, the tuning devices on the rails can be selected both by type in the form of arcs or boxes, as well as by generation of models, namely:

• first generations of compact crossovers produced during 2007-2011;
• restyled versions – 2011-2017;
• second generation – 2017 – present.

As for the convenience of such racks, then for the youth to fix skis or bikes on the roof – this is the top of the possibilities for getting adrenaline during outdoor activities. And for the family – it’s a very convenient way to transport to the cottage, outdated furniture or on the way back from the dacha to grab an extra bag of potatoes.
