Hyundai Solaris, Kia Rio and Lada Granta are sales leaders of our crisis Russian car market in absolute standings. The cars are very familiar and often seen on the road. Let’s look into the owner’s pocket: I wonder what they cost, at least during the happiest first three years of operation?

For comparison, we took Hyundai Solaris and Kia Rio in a modest Comfort package, and Granta, on the contrary, we gave weight to it by choosing the richest Luxe package, leaving onboard navigation and automatic gearbox. These are the most demanded versions on the market. All three classmates actually have the same power – 107 (in the case of Korean cars) and 106 hp (in the case of Lada), with 5-speed manual gearboxes. In terms of displacement the engines assembled at the St. Petersburg factory Hyundai Solaris and Kia Rio are slightly smaller than those of Lada: 1.4 liter vs. 1.6 liter. In particular, this explains the higher voracity of the car from the Volga banks.

As already mentioned, for comparison were taken unmarred by problems the first three years of operation, when the factory warranty is still valid. The registration does not depend on the make of the machine and is not so costly in the total list of expenses. Taxes for cars of this capacity are also reasonable: 25 rubles per horsepower gives a total of 2650-2675 rubles per year.

Policies of MTPL and Casco were calculated with a calculator of the insurance company ROSNO for an average driver without bad habits (age – 30 years, driving experience – at least 5 years). And if the annual policy of MTPL has cost all three participants in our story in the same amount of 9060 rubles, the calculation of hull insurance revealed a discrepancy. Firstly, I should note that the residual value of the car is taken into account for full indemnity, so the payment for each subsequent year was less than the previous one. Secondly, the insurance contract included a deductible of 90,000 rubles, subject to full compensation for theft and damage to the car. Without the deductible the insurance would have cost three times as much, and this is unlikely to please customers who have chosen a budget car. And thirdly, taking into account the theft rate, the owners of Solaris have to pay a little more than those who chose Rio. As a result, it turned out that Lada insurance, all other things being equal, is twice cheaper than the insurance for Hyundai and Kia.

The lion’s share of operating costs is fuel. It means that for those who live in a city and know the traffic jams firsthand, the cost of travel may be by thirty percent more expensive than the amount shown in the table. The standard warranty of the manufacturers: 3 years or 100 000 kilometers of run. True, the Koreans offer more, but it is a separate topic. We will stop on more real mileage of 60,000 km for the same period. To equip with winter tires did not skimp – all bought tires Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7, which cost the Lada a little cheaper because of the smaller diameter of the wheel – 14 inches against the 15 “Koreans”. How much does it cost to own a personal car?
We have calculated, how much money is spent monthly on a new car for three years after buying it. At the same time, we made a calculator for calculating the costs of popular models, taking into account your driving habits and average prices.
We took into account expenses that are relevant to most car owners: depreciation (reducing the cost of the car), spending on fuel, insurance (including hull insurance), maintenance, washing, seasonal tire changes and vehicle tax
. Expenses for repairs, parking and possible fines were not included in the cost of ownership, as well as the interest on the loan to buy the car.
Almost all the studied cars have depreciation as the largest expense item, accounting on average for 53% of losses. Casco is in second place (22%). Fuel costs are only in third place (13%, based on average Russian annual mileage).
According to the analytical agency Avtostat, the average annual mileage of cars in Russia is 17,500 km.

Depreciation makes up the bulk of expenses and depends on the price of the car, so the more expensive the car, the higher the cost of ownership. The most expensive car in our list, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class AMG, costs 17.4 million rubles – on average, its owner loses about 357 thousand rubles a month, of which 272 thousand rubles for depreciation.
LADA Granta owners lose the least – the most popular car in Russia costs only 13 thousand rubles a month.

The cost structure of expensive and budget cars looks different. The more expensive the car, the lower the share of costs for maintenance, MTPL and especially for fuel. Thus, owners of the ten cheapest cars spend an average of 5,400 rubles per month on fuel – a third of total expenses. Owners of the ten most expensive cars spend an average of 5,800 rubles a month on fuel, but for them it is only 4% of total costs.

Three Niva models – VAZ 2121, 2131 and Chevrolet Niva – have unusual structure of expenses: their owner loses more on fuel than on depreciation. The matter is in relatively small car value and high fuel consumption per kilometer.
During 3 years the value of a car falls by more than one third, during 5 years – approximately by half. The strongest decrease occurs in the first year, an average of 18%. Expensive cars lose their price faster.
We used data from Yandex.Taxi and carshare services to estimate how much cheaper or more expensive these alternatives are for owning a personal car.
For example, in Moscow, cars that cost up to a million rubles are more profitable than both cabs and carsharing. Owning a car worth between two and three million rubles is more expensive than carsharing, if you use cars of economy class, but cheaper than taking a cab at the rate of “Comfort. This is based on the average annual mileage for Russia. The smaller the total length of travel, the more attractive alternatives become cabs and carsharing.
